Innovation together with nature
The area protected by dykes in the Noordwaard is now smaller than it was. This involved building a new dyke at Fort Steurgat. A stand of willows, called a ‘griend’ in Dutch, was planted outside the dyke to block the waves, making it possible to build the dyke lower than usual. This is much less common in the other parts of the areas, which are protected by quays: lower quays are expected to face high water once every 100 years, while the higher quays were positioned at the 1,000-year flood line.
